Since the 1970s, the month of February has been officially devoted to celebrating the African American community. During this period, we recognize those who struggled to gain full citizenship and overcame an incredible amount of adversity.

Black History Month is honored in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Here are some ways you can celebrate in West Michigan.

Join the Grand Rapid Public Library Virtual Events

Throughout the month of February, GRPL will host virtual events to celebrate Black History Month. They’re offering programs for both kids and adults that highlight the Black community.

On February 21st-28th show your GRPL library card at any of the Taste of Soul restaurants to receive $5.00 off to support black culture, community and success.

Visit the Grand Rapids African American Museum & Archives

The museum is known for their educational memorabilia, exhibits, pop-up displays and special events. The museum shares the stories of local African Americans through recorded oral histories. Walls are filled with works by local artists, cases display fascinating historical objects, and they also have historical merchandise for sale.

GRAAMA’s mission is to “promote, preserve, display, collect and honor the lives, culture, history, and accomplishments of Africans, African Americans, and connected peoples in the greater Grand Rapids community.”
