It’s safe to say that our definition of “normal” has shifted a bit within the last few weeks. Professionals across the globe are learning to adjust their routines and some have even adapted to working remotely for the first time in their careers. Whether you’re setting up an in-home office or working from the comfort of your bed, we’re all finding how to make our breaks a little more meaningful. So the next time you’re on lunch, think about some new ways to break your habits and enjoy a much-deserved, worthwhile break.

Take a walk

Get outside and stretch your legs! Sitting at a desk all day isn’t good for anyone’s physical or mental health so take advantage of Vitamin D and get moving for at least 15 minutes. This list highlights different parks in West Michigan that generally experience lower attendance and allow for safe social distancing.

Do a 15-minute workout or meditation session

YouTube has countless videos on quick and efficient workout tutorials to do from your home. Break up the workday by breaking into a sweat! Do a midday yoga session, have a spontaneous dance party, or simply do some stretches. Michiganders have the unique opportunity to access a free collection of meditation, sleep, and movement exercises to keep a strong and healthy mind. There are meditation sessions for both adults and kids – so try it out as a family!

Read a book (not the news, again)

Take your mind off the hustle and bustle of the workday by reading a chapter or two of a good book. Turn off social media and news applications and crack open a good read while enjoying your lunch.

Watch a TED Talk

Watch an inspirational video on your break to spark motivation and learn about something new. Most videos are around ten minutes long, so it won’t be too time-consuming to enjoy over your lunch hour. Here’s a list of suggested TED videos with advice on protecting yourself from falling into a burnout stage.

Write a letter or call a friend

Whether it’s hopping on a Zoom call or a quick FaceTime chat with an old friend, it’s important to stay in contact with those that you haven’t seen in a while. Or, if you’ve been meaning to send out snail mail to friends or family, it’s a great time to reflect on memories and stories shared with your loved ones.

Explore West Michigan virtually

The West Michigan Tourist Association offers a lakeshore live stream gallery which highlights 12 different Michigan locations by showing a live feed of the area. Virtually visit your family summer vacation spot or explore new areas around the state.
