Thankful for West Michigan: Why I Love Calling This Place Home (Especially in November)

As the leaves crunch underfoot and the air turns crisp, I find myself reflecting on how lucky I am to live in West Michigan. This region isn’t just beautiful, it’s vibrant, welcoming, and full of experiences that make life here feel rich and meaningful. November, in particular, is a month that reminds me why I’m so thankful to call this place home.

Here’s what I’m looking forward to this November—and why West Michigan continues to steal my heart.

Broadway Magic Without the Big-City Price Tag

First up, The Book of Mormon is coming to DeVos Performance Hall from November 4–9. One of the best parts of living in West Michigan is having access to world-class Broadway shows without the New York price tag. I love that I can enjoy top-tier performances right in my backyard.

Baby Hippo Joy at John Ball Zoo

I’m making a special trip to John Ball Zoo to meet Hugo, the brand-new baby pygmy hippo! The zoo stays open until November 23, and even though the temps are dropping, it’s still a great time to visit. John Ball Zoo is a great place to see gorgeous fall colors, and there’s something magical about seeing animals in the crisp fall air. Seeing Hugo is just a cherry on top!

Fall Colors That Never Get Old

Fall is hands-down my favorite season, and November is peak time for soaking in the colors. We’re planning scenic walks through Calvin University’s Nature Preserve and Rosy Mound Natural Area in West Olive. We’ll also take a drive through Lowell, with a stop at Fallasburg County Park—a hidden gem that’s especially stunning this time of year.

Hike, Brews & Wildlife

On November 20, we’re heading to Blandford Nature Center for their Evening Hike & Brews with the Animals. It’s the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation—twilight trails, local brews, and up-close encounters with rescued wildlife. It’s one of those events that makes me feel deeply connected to the community and the land.

Thanksgiving Treats Without the Stress

Confession: I’m not a baker. So, I’ll be stocking up on Thanksgiving goodies from Camp Newaygo’s Bakery Pop-Up Sale, running from November 10–December 19. Their seasonal treats are delicious, and it’s a great excuse to take a scenic drive out to Newaygo and enjoy the last of the fall foliage.

Holiday Spirit in Full Swing

To kick off the holiday season, we snagged tickets to The Polar Express in Concert with the Grand Rapids Symphony. It’s only showing November 21 at 7 PM and November 22 at 2 PM, so if you’re thinking about going—don’t wait! Watching the film with a live orchestra is pure magic.

Early Holiday Shopping on the Lakeshore

I’m all about getting my holiday shopping done early, and West Michigan makes it fun. We’ll start with Holland’s Shop ‘Til You Drop event on November 14, where local businesses stay open late with special deals. Then it’s off to the Kerstmarkt Holiday Market (open Nov 16–Dec 14) for handmade gifts and festive vibes. And I can’t forget the Michigan Makers Market in Muskegon on November 15—a treasure trove of local artisans and unique finds.

Why I’m Thankful

More than anything, November is a time to reflect. Living in West Michigan means being surrounded by natural beauty, creative energy, and a community that truly cares. From the lakeshore to the forests, from symphonies to small-town bakeries—there’s so much to be grateful for.

So, here’s to cozy hikes, baby hippos, holiday cheer, and the place I’m proud to call home. West Michigan, you’ve got my heart.
