Grad School to Dancing Lessons: Alexander’s relocation from Georgia to West Michigan

What began as an academic pursuit led to a thriving career and a new life in West Michigan for Alexander.

After living in Georgia his entire life, Alexander left the state to pursue a graduate degree, and he has come to love the region of West Michigan.

Alexander is a part of the second cohort of Grand Valley State University’s HBCU/HSI Consortium— a pathway for students from historically black colleges and Hispanic serving institutions to GVSU to complete their master’s degree.

During his time at GVSU, Alexander worked as a Graduate Assistant in the TRIO STEM Program. His role involved advising them on their classes, time management, and overall well-being, as well as managing the program’s website, social media, and several events.

Now—after his graduation—Alexander works as a Data Scientist at Grand Valley State University, one of our Member Companies.

“The economic opportunities are what encourage me the most. I love all the options in the summer to go to the beach, downtown Grand Rapids has a lot of fun things to do for young couples,” he says.

Alexander first heard about Hello West Michigan through the ReThink West Michigan networking event, which he attended twice—in 2022 and 2023. At ReThink, he connected with potential employers and learned about the business landscape in Grand Rapids.

One of his favorite aspects of West Michigan is its proximity to the beach and large cities like Chicago and Detroit. Additionally, he recommends using the bus system to get around the region.

He also enjoys the plenty of opportunities for fun date nights with his wife. On a given evening, you may find him at the Social Dance Studio—learning a new style of dance. He and his wife have tried a Soap-making class, and a Murder Mystery Dinner Night.

For food options in West Michigan, he recommends Sundance Bar & Grill and Smokey Bones. For dessert, he recommends Kilwin’s Ice Cream.

In addition to his role at GVSU, Alexander also serves in the youth ministry of his church.

Whether it’s career advancement, community activities, or a convenient location, West Michigan has a lot to offer—and Alexander has enjoyed discovering all the region has to offer along the way.
