Late July in West Michigan means it is time for the annual Coastguard Festival. This year, the festival is particularly special because it is the 100th anniversary of the event, which means whether this will be your first-time or 50th-time at the festival, this will be a year to remember. The festival starts July 26 and goes until August 4.
Events You Should Know About:
The Parade of Ships and the Firework Show are the two pinnacle events of the week.
The Coastguard Ships travel through the channel and spray their water cannons, which is a neat moment to remember. The Firework Show features drones and is happening on the last night of the festival, August 4.
Here are a few other exciting events you should know about:
Cardboard Boat Race: On July 27, compete in the cardboard boat race with two age brackets, (10-15 and 16+). Prizes will be awarded for the best sinking, best theme, fastest time, and more.
The Pancake Breakfast: Enjoy a pancake breakfast fundraiser to support the Grand Haven Bucs Sports Booster, happening July 28.
Car Show: Register your classic or cool car for the Cruise-In Car Show or meander the lot alongside other car enthusiasts. While there, enjoy music and participate in the raffle. Happening on July 28, this event is free to the public and only $10 to register a vehicle.
Tribute Concerts: Jam to covers of the classics, including Queen, the Highwaymen, and Jimmy Buffet.
Events are happening all week long. From the beach volleyball tournament to the flea market to the ship tours to the craft fair, make your way to Grand Haven to celebrate the U.S. Coastguard. Find the full calendar of events here.
Tips:
Now that you’ve (hopefully) made an itinerary of the events you want to check out at the Coastguard Festival, here are a few tips to make the most of your time.
Arrive Early: Because The Coastguard Festival is so long-running, it is incredibly popular. Make sure to arrive with plenty of time to park and walk to your destination.
Pack Essentials: Remember water, snacks, sunscreen, a camp chair, sunglasses, and an umbrella in case of rain. The beach in late July can be hot, so prepare accordingly.
Parking: Parking will be tight. Prepare to park further away than you hope, as Grand Haven will be bustling with festivalgoers. Check here to learn about the shuttle option.
Treats and Sweets:
Feeling hungry or wanting a nice treat on a summer day? Here are a few of my favorite spots:
Pronto Pup: A local favorite, Pronto Pup has great corndogs. However, keep in mind that Pronto Pup is cash only.
Aldea Coffee: I love coffee shops, and Aldea Coffee is one of my favorites in West Michigan. They offer ethically sourced coffee and seasonal options.
The Pumphouse: Located along the channel, The Pumphouse is the spot for a sweet treat. It’s a frozen yogurt bar with a multitude of toppings. They also have a selection of ice cream if you prefer.
Hopefully, you are now excited and prepared to visit the Coastguard Festival. Celebrating its 100th year, this is one you won’t want to miss!
