“Michigan is only a good place to live in the summer. After summertime, it gets cold and there’s nothing to do.” How many times have you heard something along these lines? Speaking for myself, I’ve heard many people speak down toward Michigan, and the Midwest in general. The end of August is filled with many “lasts.” There’s always a last beach day, last concert, or last day of vacation. As we think about our lasts, let me remind you that September can provide just as much summer-fun in West Michigan. If you’re bummed thinking summer is over and it’s all downhill from here, September is here to prove you wrong.

Weather

A crucial part in extending summertime activities in Michigan is the weather. As we all know, Michigan weather is quite unpredictable. One day you’re rocking shorts and flip flops, the next day a parka and hat! I can assure you that will not be the case this September. Mark Torregrossa, Chief Meteorologist at MLive, informs Michiganders that summer isn’t going anywhere anytime soon! The 90 degree weather will stay consistent through the beginning of the month, and the temperature will cool off slightly–but not by much. What does that mean for us? Personally, I’m taking this as reasoning for more beach days!

Beaches

As the temperature in the air rises, so does Lake Michigan’s! Lakewater temperatures are continuing to increase due to the extreme heat. Your last beach day doesn’t have to be in August! I’ve put together a list of some of the best beaches in West Michigan that will transport you back to early summertime.

Grand Haven State Park – Grand Haven

Holland State Park – Holland

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park – Norton Shores

Food

Swimming and sunbathing all day in the heat can take a lot out of you, so let’s refuel with some good eats! I can’t send you off to beaches without food options, so here is a list of 4+ star restaurants that will complete your beach day!

Grand Haven

  • The Kirby House (American restaurant)
  • Morning Star Cafe (Southwest-inspired breakfast)
  • Great Harvest Bread Company (cafe)
  • The Toasted Pickle (sandwich shop)

Holland

  • Boatwerks Waterfront Restaurant (American restaurant)
  • Windmill Restaurant (diner)
  • Crust 54 (Italian, pizza)

Norton Shores

  • Toast ‘N Jams (breakfast)
  • The Hearthstone Bistro (French-American bistro)
  • The Station Grill (American pub)

Back-pocket Activities

Not a fan of sunbathing all day? Here are some fun ideas to look into if you’d choose adventure over relaxation at the beach:

Maria’s Itinerary

If you’re indecisive about how to spend your day off but you still want to have fun, here’s how I would plan my perfect beach day in West Michigan!

10:00 am: Grand Haven State Park

I recommend bringing a book or listening to a podcast to keep you busy. If you’re with friends, volleyball and spikeball are some of my favorite beach-day activities!

1:30 pm: Lunch break at Toasted Pickle

The Green Goddess sandwich and truffle fries are a must-try! (P.S. The Green Goddess won an award on Food Network)

2:30 pm: Walk around downtown Grand Haven and browse the boutiques and shops!

My favorite boutique is Glik’s—I can never leave empty-handed!

4:00 pm: Dessert at Pump House

Their frozen yogurt topping selection is unmatched.

5:00 pm: Happy Hour at Odd Side

Best craft drinks in West Michigan. Not a beer fan? No problem. Their seltzer collection is just as good. (Take my word and try the blueberry pancake IPA. And yes, I’m aware it sounds disgusting)

6:30 pm: End-of-day walk along the pier / stay for sunset

I highly recommend maximizing your beach day and staying until sunset. If not, an after-dinner walk along the pier is a great way to unwind and get ready to head home.
