Jennifer is a Chicago native who has been in the marketing communications field for more than 20 years. Previous roles included time with the Chicago Board of Trade and Office Max, however she was laid off at her previous job due to the recession. Following the downsizing, she was left with a question of where to take her talent and experience next. Jennifer’s husband, Pat, had just been promoted at his company to a position that allowed him to travel and cover territories including Michigan. Together they decided it was time for a location change.

With his new position, Pat made frequent trips to Grand Rapids, and mentioned that he particularly liked the atmosphere of the area when looking at Michigan as a new place to live. As a potential new relocatee (versus a boomerang), Jennifer’s initial reaction to the idea of Grand Rapids was simply that she didn’t know anyone there or anything about the area in general. So, she started to research and talk to others who might. “I was pleasantly surprised by the consistency in remarks”, said Jennifer. “Everyone talked about it being a growing city, a wonderful place to live, and a good area to raise kids. All of these things were encouraging to hear as a professional and active mother”.

With help from a personal connection at a previous position, Jennifer interviewed for a Senior Manager of External Relations opening at Meijer. After being hired, Plus Relocation Services helped her find a neighborhood and school system. “Overall, it made our move to Michigan a much easier experience compared to doing it all on my own” said Jennifer. One of the recruiters at Meijer connected Jennifer to Hello West Michigan for supplemental resources along the way.

As soon as they arrived, Jennifer, Pat, and the family, loved the down to earth ͟    people of West Michigan. They love being able to get outside and do things as a family, and the schools have been a great fit. When discussing her new position Jennifer said, “I enjoy the new leadership role and like the momentum and thoughtful strategy Meijer has in place.” Clearly, many aspects played into making their relocation a positive experience, and we are thrilled we got to be a part of it.
